 | The Chinese Girl | Mar 10, 2005 |
My husband once told me that I looked like the actress in the movie, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”. I asked, “Which one?” and he said, “The Chinese girl”. I was born and raised in the Philippines to a certified public accountant, who did not make much money, but was an honorable and well-respected man (he refused to “fix” the financial statements of big corporations), and a businesswoman, who studied to become a clinical psychologist, but decided she would make more money running her own business. I was 11 years old when my father died. I am the eldest among three kids, and my brothers were nine and seven. My father did not leave us much so my mom was forced to find better opportunities outside the Philippines. She ran a business for about 10 years. I hated sales, but my first job out of college was selling broadcasting equipment. It was the best option I had, considering the state of the Philippine economy. I thought it would open doors for me to get a job at a TV network. But after three and a half years in this job, I had to immigrate to the United States. I have been here in Chicago since 1998. It was here where I met my husband who once told me I looked like the Chinese girl in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”, an all-Chinese movie.
